Congratulations to Lucas Molandes, who in his return to both Austin and stand-up comedy after a sabbatical lasting more than a year, won the 25th annual Funniest Person in Austin contest earlier this week at Cap City Comedy Club.
Molandes, 30, delivered a set that focused on reevaluating his own life, as well as the notions of midlife crises and old age. Here's the winning routine:
Coincidentally, the Austin American-Statesman profiled Molandes a few weeks ago before the start of the competition, and talked to him about how he moved to New York after performing at Montreal's "New Faces" and Live at Gotham, only to drop out of the comedy scene for more than a year, and also moving back in with his parents in Austin. I've already been a fan of Molandes, so I'm glad to see him back onstage.
Oh shit. That was good! I don't know what his stuff was like before, but I like what he's doing now A LOT. Nothing makes me laugh more than a depressed, pessimistic, misanthropic comic. Really really loved this set.

Back from a preliminary Googling. And links are already hilighted? Turns out I looked him up a few months ago. (I never clean my history anymore because of incognito windows on Google Chrome. No need!)
Point is, I guess I liked what I saw before and definitely like what I'm seeing now.

There were 14 other comics in the annual Austin contest, all of them good, and all of them deserving to be in the finals. Austin has a great comedy scene. But Lucas was truly in a league of his own in that contest.
A gifted comic and a sincerely nice guy, too. Good to see him getting the attention he deserves.

To clarify, the Funniest Person in Austin contest started with 120+ comics.
There were 15 comics in the final round.
